Hanamatsuri—literally, Flower Festival—is our colorful celebration of the
historical Buddha’s birthday. Born in India in 566 B.C., Sakyamuni Buddha’s
profound and compassionate teachings are now practiced by one-third of
the world’s population.

The Temple usually invite you to participate in the Kanbutsu (Sweet Tea
Pouring Ceremony) from 9:00–10:00 a.m. before the service begins. The ritual
is simple: Approach the hanamido (flower altar), ladle the sweet tea over the
bronze statue of the Baby Buddha and gassho. The little altar is adorned with
flowers to represent Lumbini Garden where Sakyamuni was born. The tea
suggests the sweet rain falling at his birth.
